SESSION A WORKSHOPS: 2:20-3:20

  • How to Start Fresh Expressions: Stories from Leaders of Smoky Mtn. District Fresh Expressions

Led By: Wayner Dickert, Sherrie and Alan Schork, Judi Ferris

The Fresh Expression Movement is growing new Christian communities throughout our district. They start by gathering people together around common interests like food, hiking, or social justice, and gradually introduce opportunities for discipleship. If you’ve wondered what is needed to start a Fresh Expression or had an idea for a community anchored in your church but didn’t know where to start, join us as we share our experiences and tips for how to start a Fresh Expression of church in your community.

  • Finance Committees, Budgeting, and Apportionments

Led By: Mark King, Conference Treasurer and Director of Administrative Services

This workshop will focus on understanding the structure and requirements for effective Finance Committee work. Additionally, we will look at WNCC apportionments funds, how local church apportionments are calculated, how they fit into the grand scheme of local church budgeting and reviewing best practices on local church budget formation, calculation, and stewardship in giving to the budget.

  • Faith and Generosity: A New View of Stewardship

Led By: David Snipes, President, United Methodist Foundation of WNC

For many years the word “stewardship” was often associated with giving money to the church. Although there is some truth in this interpretation, as members of the Body of Christ we must ask ourselves, “Why do I Give?” This workshop will look at giving beyond the offering plate as we consider stewardship as an act of our faithfulness. The theology behind stewardship will be discussed as well as creative ways to approach the subject within our church pews.

  • Moving to a One Board Governance

Led By: Amy Coles, Assistant to the Bishop WNCCUMC

Every United Methodist Church needs a church structure, but often, we find ourselves preoccupied with filling the vacancies on all the committees and in doing so, lose focus on our mission. Many United Methodist churches are adopting a streamlined form of congregational governance which is a more effective use of our time and resources. Come and learn how to get people out of meetings and into mission and ministry.

  • Healthy Practices for a Healthy S/PPRC

Led By: Beth Crissman, District Superintendent Blue Ridge District

Serving as a member of the Staff/Pastor Relations Committee is one of the most essential yet challenging of all leadership roles in the church. Too often, members feel “stuck in the middle” when their role calls them to stand on the promises of effective ministry for both clergy and congregations to fulfill the mission of the church. This workshop will equip and empower you with biblical and practical skills and healthy functional boundaries to work collaboratively with pastors and parishioners to optimize your life and ministry together.

  • Growing a Ministry of Congregational Care

Led By: Rev. Hardy Tippett

Care for members of a congregation, regardless of size, is the responsibility of both pastor and members of the congregation. This workshop will explore a variety of ways to care for each other such as, home visitation, transportation, and care for the sick and grieving. We will discuss ways to be sensitive to how lay and clergy can work together to care for all.

  • Introduction to Gracious Accountability Groups

Led By: Sue Jones, Smoky Mountain District Lay Leader and Ron Ballard

John and Charles Wesley, founders of the Methodist movement in the 1700’s began small groups where members held each other graciously accountable to their walk with Jesus. In this session, we will begin to unpack the details of why these groups are important and how we start them by referencing The Class Meeting by Kevin Watson.

  • Congregations4Children: Transforming the Lives of Children and Families

Led By: Linda Dills, Smoky Mountain District Representative for C4C

Congregations4Children’s mission is to transform the lives of children and families impacted by poverty. This session will explore the reasons why churches should reach out to children, including specific ways that all areas of ministry can engage with families. Together we will consider how individuals and churches will be transformed through seeking to make a difference in the lives of children.

Session B Workshops: 3:30-4:25 p.m.

SESSION B WORKSHOPS: 3:30-4:30

  • Serving on Trustees Committee

Led By: Amy Coles, Assistant to the Bishop, WNCCUMC

Effective trustees function as Christian stewards of the property which God has entrusted to the congregation. This ministry includes supervising and maintaining both the physical property of the congregation and gifts made to the congregation so that the ministries of the local church are vital and effective. Join us as we look at the responsibilities of the Trustees in a local church.
